Here's the honest answer to what an air fryer is and how it works: it's a small convection oven with a basket. That's it. The term "air fryer" is essentially a marketing invention — these devices don't fry anything in the traditional sense, and they aren't doing anything that convection ovens haven't done for decades. But knowing exactly what they are actually helps you decide whether you need one, and the answer might surprise a skeptic.
What Is an Air Fryer and How Does It Actually Work?

To find out, a batch of about 150 grams of frozen fries was run through several devices side by side: a cheap standalone air fryer, a fancier standalone air fryer, two air-fryer-toaster-oven combos, and a full-size convection oven (with an air fryer basket purchased separately to make the comparison fair).
The two standalone air fryers, set to 400°F with no preheating, produced perfectly crispy fries in exactly 20 minutes. The full-size convection oven needed 12 minutes just to preheat, then 20 minutes of cooking — and the fries still weren't done. Another 10 minutes later, they were almost there. Total time: over 40 minutes, with inferior results. Part of the blame goes to the specific oven, which runs its convection fan intermittently rather than continuously, cutting effectiveness considerably. A better convection oven might close that gap, but the size advantage of the air fryer still stands.
The takeaway: yes, an air fryer and a convection oven use the same basic physics. But the air fryer's small size and powerful fan make it meaningfully better at the specific task of quickly crisping food — especially from frozen.
Can You Use a Convection Oven as an Air Fryer?
Technically yes, and if you already own a convection oven and don't want another appliance crowding your countertop, it's absolutely worth trying. You can buy an air fryer basket and tray — the same kind that comes bundled with many toaster ovens — and place it inside your convection oven to replicate the airflow setup of a dedicated air fryer.

Whether this works well depends heavily on your specific oven. If your convection fan runs continuously and your oven holds temperature consistently, results may be surprisingly good. If your oven's fan cycles on and off, or if your oven is large enough that a small batch of food gets lost in the space, you may find the dedicated air fryer wins handily on speed and crispiness.

Is an Air Fryer Toaster Oven Combo Worth Buying?

A solid air fryer. The problem is that this machine cannot turn its fan off. It's a two-speed fan, and it slows down in bake mode, but it never stops — because the fan also cools the motor sitting directly above a box that can hit 450°F. The result is that bake mode and convection bake mode are functionally identical. If you try to roast vegetables the same way you always have, you will burn them. You have to remember to drop your temperature by at least 50°F to compensate. Every single time.
The second unit, a Black & Decker model, avoids this problem by having a true conventional oven mode. Its air fry feature is less impressive — the fan is weaker, and the temperature is locked at 450°F with no adjustment — but you can use it as a normal toaster oven without constantly second-guessing yourself.
