What Is Stanford's Center for Just Environmental Futures?
Stanford's Center for Just Environmental Futures is a newly launched research and advocacy hub housed within the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. Approved in October 2024 and publicly unveiled at a conference in late March, the center is led by Professor Maxine Burkett — the Emerson Collective Professor of Climate, Environment and Society — and is designed to bring together legal scholars, community advocates, graduate researchers, and practitioners to advance climate and environmental justice. Over a day and a half, attendees heard from senior government officials, indigenous-led conservation researchers, legal advocates for Indian Country sovereignty, and a remarkable roster of graduate students presenting cutting-edge research. The message was clear: this center is not a nice-to-have appendage to Stanford's sustainability work — it is, as Professor Burkett puts it, indispensable to it.
Why Does Environmental Justice Matter for Climate Change?
Environmental justice sits at the very core of why climate change is so difficult to solve. The argument made repeatedly throughout the conference — and central to the center's mission — is that we cannot engineer our way out of climate harm without confronting the political, economic, social, and racial systems that produced that harm in the first place.
Professor Burkett framed it powerfully: the current environmental crisis, whether we're talking about the pollution crisis, the biodiversity collapse, or the climate emergency itself, has been built upon the systematic sacrifice of people, communities, and nature. Sustainability, in this view, is not achievable without just processes and a foundational recognition of human dignity.
PhD student and center fellow Rudy Harib echoed this directly: "The barriers to a just transition are not scientific alone. What Is Climate Displacement and Who Does It Impact Most?
Climate displacement is one of the most urgent and under-discussed consequences of the climate crisis, and it is a central focus of the center's research agenda. Rudy Harib, a PhD student whose dissertation examines climate migration, is exploring how communities in the global south — and increasingly in the United States — are being forced from their homes by climate-driven disasters.
Much of Harib's fieldwork centers on East Africa, particularly Kenya, where climate migrants from Somalia are arriving due to severe drought in the Horn of Africa. But the issue is not distant or abstract. Harib, who grew up in Los Angeles just twenty minutes from Altadena, watched the recent wildfires displace communities and neighborhoods he had known his whole life.

Can We Engineer Our Way Out of Climate Change?
It's a question that divides the sustainability world: is climate change fundamentally a technical problem or a social one? The center's answer is unambiguous — it is both, and ignoring the social dimension guarantees failure.
Professor Burkett pointed to recent work by Stanford colleague Mark Jacobson, who has argued that we already possess all the technical answers needed to address climate change. If that's true, what's holding us back? According to Burkett, it's the failure to treat justice as a core operating principle rather than an add-on. "We've made it an ornamental element of doing business versus a core part of that," she said — a phrase that stopped the conversation cold for its precision and honesty.
The implication is significant for engineers, technologists, and business leaders: deploying renewable energy, carbon capture, or any other technical solution into a world still structured by racial inequity, colonial land relationships, and concentrated economic power will not produce the outcomes we need. The technical and the just must advance together.
What Are Rights of Nature and Indigenous Land Governance?
One of the conference's most provocative panels explored rights of nature and rights of place — frameworks that challenge conventional Western legal and governance systems by recognizing the inherent rights of ecosystems, rivers, and landscapes, not just human beings.
The panel brought together a striking mix of expertise: a former senior Department of Energy official from the Biden administration, a biologist working with indigenous plant knowledge pioneer Robin Wall Kimmerer, and an attorney specializing in democracy, sovereignty, and displacement for Indian Country. Together, they introduced a way of thinking about the environmental crisis that operates in what Burkett calls "deep time and deep space" — looking back centuries and forward at least a generation to understand how we arrived here and where we need to go.
Central to this conversation is the reality that many indigenous peoples live transboundary existences — their communities, cultures, and relationships with land do not map onto the borders drawn by colonial powers. Millian Chen, a Stanford sophomore studying earth systems, raised the question directly: when talking about nonconventional frameworks for land and governance, how do we ensure consent and genuine partnership with indigenous communities? The panel's answer pointed toward co-governance models, legal recognition of indigenous sovereignty, and a fundamental shift in whose knowledge is treated as authoritative.
What Does Environmental Justice Look Like Across Borders?
The conference title — Preferred Futures: Climate and Environmental Justice Across Borders — was not accidental. Environmental and climate justice challenges are inherently transnational, and the center is explicitly designed to work across geographies, legal systems, and knowledge traditions.
The lightning talk sessions — twenty presentations selected from a much larger pool of applications — illustrated this global scope vividly. Graduate students presented research on peatland conservation in Colombia, food system modeling in India, gendered climate vulnerability in Madagascar, and indigenous-led conservation governance. Each project was rooted in a specific place and community, but together they demonstrated that the environmental justice crisis is a planetary one, demanding planetary collaboration.
Perhaps the most memorable moment of the conference came from a junior in high school from Texas who traveled to Stanford to present his work on air quality monitoring and urban pollution in his region. He had already founded a nonprofit to continue the work. As Harib observed: "He made us all feel like we were behind the curve."
